Two Sides of the Roaring 20s

The Roaring 20s were times of wealth, prosperity, and recklessness. Most whites were wealthy and entertainment was widespread. Everyone wanted to "make it" in the entertainment industry. They all wanted to be rich and famous. However, not everyone was so well off. African Americans were still battling discrimination and racism. They were poor and hungry.
It is important to broaden our horizons to see the other side of things during the 1920s. From a first look, these years seem amazing. Parties, acting, dancing- there were all forms of entertainment. Mansions and money are all we think about in regard to these times. However, it is clear that these were mainly for Caucasians. Most African Americans did not enjoy the same forms of entertainment because they did not enjoy the same forms of societal equality. Therefore, by broadening our horizons, and seeing the other sides of things, it can be seen that the although the Roaring 20s were prosperous and wealthy, most of this wealth was allocated in one spot- with Caucasian men. Women were still considered lower than men.
The other side of the 1920s is the side people don't want to see or think about. It is the poor scavenging for food while the rich sit in their mansions and throw away their leftovers. It is the black man working in a factory from 8am to 10pm, barely able to feed his family while the rich white man sits in his mansion watching others work for him. The 1920s seem like a great time to be alive for none other than white men.

  1. I like how you used your own definition to describe the 1920s. Nice job!
