"The Great Gatsby" and the American Dream

Generally, the American Dream is associated with wealth and prosperity- at least in the 1920s. All people cared about was partying and money. There was a substantial gap between the wealthy and the poor. This is made clear in " The Great Gatsby ." The poor residents of the Valley of Ashes are wedged in between the wealthy residents of East and West Egg. While the poor are slaving away, the rich are partying. This too emphasizes the theme of my last post. The author of the book has used the color gold to represent wealth. He uses many colors as different symbols throughout the book. Gold is only associated with the people of East and West Egg. The people of East Egg have inherited their money whereas the people of West Egg have earned their money. Therefore, the people of West Egg have more so earned/achieved the American Dream than the people of East Egg whose wealth has been handed to them on a silver platter. Two Sides of the Roaring 20s

The Roaring 20s were times of wealth, prosperity, and recklessness. Most whites were wealthy and entertainment was widespread. Everyone wanted to "make it" in the entertainment industry. Most African Americans did not enjoy the same forms of entertainment because they did not enjoy the same forms of societal equality. Therefore, by broadening our horizons, and seeing the other sides of things, it can be seen that the although the Roaring 20s were prosperous and wealthy, most of this wea...

Analyzing the Things we See

Everywhere around us things are constantly happening. While you want to stay in place, the world keeps moving. Everything keeps changing. I am an ant in a large room, a single person in a world that keeps on spinning. I don't dwell on the little moments. I don't stop and look around and analyze the world around me. I go through the motions day after day, forgetting my past and remembering my future. I realize the importance of stopping for a second and analyzing the world around us- taking a mental image of what you have seen and seeing it for what it is. What is happening in the image? What is in the foreground? What is in the background? What is the message the image is giving you? How is it making you feel? Each and every single moment that we see can answer each and every one of these questions. "What's the point of analyzing the things we see," you ask. When you analyze something, you learn from it. You remember it. Life is in these little moments. You lear...
